President John Evans Atta Mills of Ghana passed away at age 68 today after succumbing to what was rumored to be throat cancer. President Mills is Ghana’s first president to die in office and was replaced by his Vice President John Mahama. He was a man dedicated to helping his country grow and develop economically, and in a method that would limit corruption. Ghana’s gold industry has been deemed compliant with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, and under President Mills the country was looking at initiating its currently developing oil industry into the process as well. Ghana was the fastest growing country in the world in 2011 with a GDP growth rate hovering at around 13.4%. Last March I had the honor of meeting his wife Ernestina Naadu Mills and I wish her the best in what is undoubtedly a difficult time for her.
