Africa, Reclaim Your Agency: Embrace Social Media and Your Diaspora

africansforafrica:

The absence of hope in so much contemporary thought about civil society organizations and the dwindling funding pool globally is making me so angry.

We ALL have agency. We don’t need funding to keep the revolution going. Who cares if those in power want to use the false perception that we are post-racial, post-apartheid to invalidate our efforts to keep pushing? Can they withdraw funding from our hearts? Our quest to make this world a little better for our children?

South Africa, you rose against the impossible; many lost their lives and gave their livelihoods for this day, and it was NOT for you to say all hope is lost. You have the infrastructure to embrace alternate paths to garnering support: social media, online fundraising, the diaspora. Resources are available to you outside your immediate networks, if you just reach.

(Amped. Woke up to read this article and now off to run my first online fundraising workshop for African women non-profits. Must reel myself in from getting emotional. I believe in my work. I believe in Africa. I’m done with these hopeless sentiments about funding).
