Great piece Michelle. This is something that I’m sure most, if not all, first-generation Africans who do not know the language of their homeland deal with. Living in a country other than the African nation that you also call home, there’s always that question of “authenticity.” Whether people would like to admit it or not. So not knowing the language of your homeland, “your” language, adds to that doubt of authenticity.
