Artist Lounge: Music, In a Traditional Sense

Malian musical traditions stem from the griots or what are simply known as the “keepers of memories.” A griot is a West African historian, narrator, praise songster, poet and/or musician. Present-day griots reside in various parts of West Africa and are found amongst the Mandé people, for example. The nations in which these people can be found include; Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Chad, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone.
